About
Sunset Rubdown is a Canadian indie rock band known for their eclectic blend of indie rock, freak folk, and Quebec indie influences. Originating in the mid-2000s as a solo project of Spencer Krug, the band evolved into a full-fledged group with the addition of Michael Doerksen (guitar), Jordan Robson-Cramer (drums, guitar), Camilla Wynne (keyboards, percussion, vocals), and later Nicholas Merz (bass). Sunset Rubdown is celebrated for their imaginative and often theatrical soundscapes, which resonate through albums like Shut Up I Am Dreaming and Dragon Slayer. Their music is characterized by complex arrangements and vivid storytelling, making them a standout in the indie music scene.
How to Sound Like Sunset Rubdown
Sunset Rubdown's sonic character is marked by its layered, theatrical textures and dynamic shifts between melodic and chaotic moments. Their sound often features a rich tapestry of synths and guitars, with Krug's use of the Alesis Micron Synthesizer and Korg SV-1 Stage Vintage Piano providing a lush backdrop for the band's vivid narratives. The use of the Marshall JCM800 1959 Mk II Super Lead amp adds a raw, powerful edge to their guitar tones, complementing the intricate drum patterns and harmonious vocal arrangements. Their music thrives on creating a dramatic yet cohesive sound, inviting listeners into a world where the line between reality and fantasy blurs.
