About
Grand National is an English alternative dance duo formed by Rupert Lyddon (vocals, guitar, production) and Lawrence Rudd (vocals, bass, production). Originating from London, the pair emerged from the city's vibrant music scene with a blend of electro-pop sensibilities reminiscent of New Order and Depeche Mode, combined with sweet harmonies and laid-back grooves. They first caught attention with their debut EP EP1 and later, their full-length album Kicking the National Habit, which drew comparisons to iconic acts like Duran Duran and Talk Talk. Grand National's sound is characterized by catchy rhythms and melodic arrangements that have seen them collaborate with and remix for notable artists such as Snow Patrol and Client.
How to Sound Like Grand National
Grand National's sound is a fusion of tight, rhythmic grooves and melodic synth textures. Their music often features a clean yet punchy production style, with crisp, driving bass lines and uplifting harmonic layers. The duo's use of drum machines and electronic percussion adds an infectious danceability to their tracks, while their vocal delivery provides a smooth, polished finish. To capture their vibe, consider using a combination of Schecter PT guitars for sharp, defined riffs, alongside synths and drum machines that offer a blend of vintage warmth and modern clarity. The result is an engaging, dance-ready sound that invites both introspection and movement.
