About
Hoodoo Gurus is an iconic Australian rock band that emerged from Sydney's vibrant music scene in 1981. Known for their infectious blend of indie rock, power pop, jangle pop, and surf rock, the band was originally formed by Dave Faulkner (vocals, guitar), James Baker (drums), Rod Radalj (guitar), and Kimble Rendall (guitar). Their lineup solidified with the addition of Brad Shepherd (guitar), Clyde Bramley (bass), and later Richard Grossman (bass), and saw Mark Kingsmill replace Baker on drums. The Hoodoo Gurus became a fixture in the Australian and international rock circuits with hits like "What's My Scene" and "Come Anytime," earning a reputation for high-energy performances and catchy, well-crafted songs.
How to Sound Like Hoodoo Gurus
The Hoodoo Gurus' sound is characterized by its vibrant, melodic guitar lines and a dynamic rhythm section that fuses the raw energy of rock with the catchy hooks of pop. Their music often features rich, layered guitar tones, achieved through the use of instruments like the Gibson Les Paul Deluxe and Gretsch Country Gentleman. These guitars, paired with the powerful drive of a Marshall JCM800 amp, deliver a full-bodied yet crisp sound that cuts through their mix of upbeat rhythms and sing-along choruses. The tight, punchy bass lines from a Fender Precision Bass provide a robust backbone that supports the band’s energetic compositions, while dynamic drumming adds a lively pulse to their music. The Hoodoo Gurus' ability to combine these elements into a cohesive and engaging sonic experience is central to their enduring appeal.
