About
Incantation is a seminal American death metal band originating from New Jersey in 1989. Renowned for their unyielding brutality and complex musical arrangements, the group was founded by John McEntee (guitarist and later vocalist), alongside original drummer/vocalist Paul Ledney. Over the years, the lineup has seen various changes, but McEntee remains the driving force. Known for blending death metal, grindcore, and elements of black and doom metal, Incantation has maintained a relentless presence in the metal scene, particularly from their New York City base.
How to Sound Like Incantation
Incantation's sound is characterized by its dense, aggressive guitar riffs and dark, atmospheric undertones. The gritty and cavernous tones are often achieved through the use of B.C. Rich Mockingbird guitars coupled with powerful amplifiers like the Marshall JCM800. Their music features punishing, overdriven rhythms and haunting melodic passages, supported by the Boss SD-1 Super OverDrive, which adds a raw edge to their sound. Incantation's compositions often shift between slow, doom-laden sections and rapid-fire grindcore elements, creating a sonic experience that is both oppressive and enthralling.
