About
Iron Monkey is a notorious English sludge metal band hailing from Nottingham, formed in 1994. Known for their abrasive and unrelenting sound, the group originally consisted of Jim Rushby (guitar, vocals), Doug Dalziel (bass), and Justin Greaves (drums), with various lineup changes over the years. The band carved out a niche in the doom, sludge, and stoner metal genres, gaining a cult following for their raw and aggressive musical approach. After disbanding in the late '90s, Iron Monkey reformed in 2017 with Rushby and original bassist Steve Watson, joined by new drummer Scott Briggs, continuing their legacy with renewed intensity.
How to Sound Like Iron Monkey
Capturing Iron Monkey's sound involves embracing a heavy, gritty, and distorted sonic character. Their music is marked by visceral guitar riffs and thunderous bass lines, which demand high-gain distortion and fuzz effects to achieve their signature sludge metal grit. Using tube amps cranked to deliver intense saturation can help replicate their dense, overpowering tone. The drum sound is aggressive and driving, often with a raw, unrefined edge that complements the chaotic energy of their compositions. To emulate their sound, focus on creating a mix that is thick and oppressive, with an emphasis on low-end power and relentless, pummeling rhythms. The overall production should feel raw and unpolished, capturing the visceral intensity that defines Iron Monkey's music.
