About
Electric Wizard is an English band renowned for their heavy, crushing sound within the doom metal, sludge metal, and stoner metal genres. Hailing from Dorset, the group was initially formed in 1993 by Justin Oborn (vocals, guitar), alongside Tim Bagshaw (bass) and Mark Greening (drums). Over the years, the lineup has evolved, with Liz Buckingham joining on guitar, contributing to their dense, monolithic soundscapes. Electric Wizard's music is deeply rooted in the occult and psychedelia, drawing influence from horror literature and films, which is reflected in their dark, thunderous compositions.
How to Sound Like Electric Wizard
Electric Wizard's sonic character is heavy and abrasive, marked by a wall of distorted riffs and a dense, murky atmosphere. Their sound is notably aggressive and unrelenting, with thick, fuzz-laden guitar tones that create a sense of overwhelming doom. To capture this vibe, guitars like the Gibson SG Standard and Epiphone SG G-400 are often employed, paired with powerful amplifiers such as the Marshall JCM800 2203 to deliver those monumental, crushing tones. The use of pedals like the Boss FZ-2 Hyper Fuzz helps achieve the fuzz-drenched, seismic riffs that define their music. Their soundscape is further enriched by atmospheric effects such as the Roland RE-201 Space Echo, which adds a layer of eerie, vintage echo, enhancing the otherworldly quality of their music.
