About

Jesu is a British experimental music project spearheaded by Justin Broadrick, a prolific figure in the extreme music scene. Originating from Birmingham, England, Jesu emerged in the early 2000s after Broadrick's influential industrial metal band Godflesh initially disbanded. While Broadrick is the core member, often handling vocals, guitar, and production, Jesu has collaborated with various musicians over the years. The project encompasses a wide range of genres, including post-metal, shoegaze, drone, and sludge metal, blending heavy guitar textures with ambient soundscapes and introspective melodies.

How to Sound Like Jesu

Jesu's sound is characterized by a dense, atmospheric layering of guitar and electronic elements, creating a stark yet melodic tapestry that shifts between the aggressive and the ethereal. The use of distortion pedals like the Boss HM-2 Heavy Metal contributes to the crushing, sludge-infused guitar riffs, while the Elektron Analog Keys synthesizer adds an ambient, drone-like quality to their music. Broadrick's preference for extended-range guitars, such as the Schecter Hellraiser Hybrid PT-7, allows for a broader tonal palette, enabling him to explore the lower registers that underpin Jesu's sound. The resulting sonic character is both expansive and immersive, achieving a unique balance of heaviness and tranquility.
