About

Malaria! is a pioneering all-female German band formed in 1981, renowned for their intense blend of New Wave, Post-punk, and Gothic rock. Emerging from the vibrant music scene of West Berlin, the group was founded by Gudrun Gut (electronics, vocals), Bettina Köster (vocals, saxophone), Manon P. Duursma (guitar), Christine Hahn (drums), and Susanne Kuhnke (bass). Malaria! quickly became known for their raw, avant-garde sound and their contributions to the Neue Deutsche Welle movement, earning a passionate following with tracks like "Kaltes Klares Wasser."

How to Sound Like Malaria!

Malaria!’s sound is characterized by its dark, aggressive energy and experimental edge, achieved through a mix of minimalist electronic beats and raw, angular guitar riffs. The band often utilizes a cold, reverb-heavy production style that accentuates their stark, rhythmic arrangements. Gudrun Gut’s use of Ableton Live allows for a seamless integration of industrial textures and live elements, adding an electronic pulse to their music. Bettina Köster’s haunting saxophone lines weave through the tracks, providing an eerie melodic layer, while the percussive drive of Christine Hahn’s drumming anchors their sound with a relentless, primal force. For musicians seeking to capture Malaria!’s distinctive vibe, focusing on creating a darkly atmospheric and rhythmically intense soundscape is key.
