Xmal Deutschland is a seminal German band that emerged from the fertile ground of the early '80s post-punk and new wave scenes. Originating from Hamburg in 1980, the group was initially composed of five women: Anja Huwe (vocals), Manuela Rickers (guitar), Fiona Sangster (keyboards), Caro May (drums), and Rita Simon (vocals, briefly). They quickly became known for their brooding and atmospheric sound, which blended elements of new wave, gothic rock, and darkwave. Xmal Deutschland carved out a niche for themselves with their haunting melodies and compelling stage presence, eventually gaining a following in the UK with their 4AD releases like Fetisch and Tocsin.

Xmal Deutschland's sound is characterized by ethereal yet driving guitar riffs and atmospheric synth layers that create a haunting, otherworldly vibe. The music often feels like a sonic tapestry of dark, textured soundscapes punctuated by Anja Huwe's enchanting vocals. Manuela Rickers' guitar work, employing a Fender Stratocaster and Boss BF-2 Flanger, adds a distinctive shimmer and depth, while Fiona Sangster's keyboards, notably the Yamaha DX7, contribute to the band's dark, dreamlike sound.
