About

Master is a pioneering band in the death metal and thrash metal genres, originating from Chicago, Illinois. Formed in the early 1980s, the group was founded by Paul Speckmann (vocals, bass), who has been the band's driving force throughout its evolution. The original lineup included Bill Schmidt (drums) and Chris Mittelbrun (guitar), with various members contributing over the years. Known for their aggressive and raw sound, Master has been a seminal influence on the extreme metal scene, blending elements of thrash metal, death metal, and grindcore to create a relentless auditory assault.

How to Sound Like Master

Master's sound is characterized by its raw intensity and aggressive edge, with a focus on fast-paced, thunderous riffs and guttural vocals. The sonic texture is decidedly gritty and chaotic, often using heavy distortion and rapid tempo changes to maintain an unyielding energy. The Epiphone Goth Thunderbird IV bass, used by Speckmann, contributes to the band's dense, low-end punch, while their guitar work often incorporates complex, shredding solos and powerful, rhythmic chugging. Amplifiers and effects processors are employed to enhance the heaviness and sustain of their sound, achieving a brutal, wall-of-sound effect that is both overwhelming and exhilarating. Drums in Master’s music are fast and ferocious, providing a relentless backbone that drives their aggressive musical narrative.
