About
Mezzoforte is an Icelandic jazz fusion band that has been a staple in the jazz-funk scene since their formation in 1977. Hailing from Reykjavik, the group was originally formed by Friðrik Karlsson (guitar), Eythór Gunnarsson (keyboards), Jóhann Ásmundsson (bass), and Gunnlaugur Briem (drums). Over the years, they have incorporated additional musicians such as Stefán S. Stefánsson (saxophone) and Kristinn Svavarsson (saxophone), bringing vibrant layers to their sound. Known for their energetic and dynamic compositions, Mezzoforte expertly blends elements of jazz, jazz fusion, jazz-funk, and smooth jazz, making them a prominent name in the genre.
How to Sound Like Mezzoforte
Mezzoforte's sound is characterized by its crisp, melodic interplay and rhythmic sophistication. The band achieves a polished yet dynamic sonic character, often combining fluid guitar leads with synth-laden backdrops. Guitarist Friðrik Karlsson’s use of the Roland JC-120 Jazz Chorus contributes to the clean, sparkling tones that define their guitar sound, while the Boss SD-1 Super OverDrive adds subtle warmth and grit when needed. On the keys, Eythór Gunnarsson’s choice of instruments, such as the Moog Memorymoog and the Yamaha DX7, provides lush, atmospheric textures that complement the rhythmic grooves laid down by the bass and drums. This combination results in a rich, layered sound that is both inviting and sophisticated, inviting listeners into a world of intricate musical storytelling.
