About

Motograter is an American metal band known for their unique blend of alternative metal, industrial metal, groove metal, rap metal, rap rock, and nu metal. Originating in Santa Barbara, California, and later based in Austin, Texas, the band was formed in 1995 by Bruce "Grater" Butler, who invented the band's namesake instrument, the motograter—a homemade contraption made of heavy cable, cranks, and gears. Key members over the years have included Joey "Smur" Krzywonski (percussion), Zak "The Waz" Ward (vocals), Chris "Crispy" Binns (drums), Eric Gonzales (electronics and samples), Ivan "Ghost" Moody (vocals), Matt "Nuke" Nunes (guitar), Michael "Angel" Woodruff (vocals), Tyler Hole (guitar), Mylon Guy (bass), Jeremy "Twitch" Scheller (drums), Mark Nosler (motograter), and James Anthony Legion (vocals). Known for their intense live shows and lineup changes, they have released albums such as their eponymous debut and Desolation.

How to Sound Like Motograter

Motograter's sound is characterized by its dark, aggressive, and industrial edge, combining the raw energy of metal with an experimental approach. Their music often features heavy, distorted guitar riffs and a pounding rhythm section, creating a dense and powerful sonic landscape. The unique motograter instrument adds a percussive and mechanical texture, enhancing the industrial feel of their music. Vocals range from guttural screams to melodic hooks, while electronic elements and samples provide an additional layer of complexity. To emulate their sound, musicians might explore using high-gain amplifiers, distortion pedals, and electronic sample pads to achieve a similar fusion of intense metal with industrial and experimental elements. Drummers might focus on a tight, driving beat with frequent use of double bass pedals, while guitarists could experiment with drop tunings and heavy palm-muted chugging to capture the band's signature aggressive and rhythmic style.
