Motograter is an American metal band known for their unique blend of alternative metal, industrial metal, groove metal, rap metal, rap rock, and nu metal. Originating in Santa Barbara, California, and later based in Austin, Texas, the band was formed in 1995 by Bruce "Grater" Butler, who invented the band's namesake instrument, the motograter—a homemade contraption made of heavy cable, cranks, and gears.
