About

Nena is a renowned German pop and new wave band that emerged from the vibrant music scene of West Berlin in the early 1980s. Originally formed by Gabriele Susanne Kerner, known simply as Nena (vocals), the band included Rolf Brendel (drums), Uwe Fahrenkrog-Petersen (keyboards), Carlo Karges (guitar), and Jürgen Dehmel (bass). Their music seamlessly blends elements of pop, new wave, and rock, making them a pivotal force in the Neue Deutsche Welle movement. Known worldwide for their hit "99 Luftballons", Nena captured the spirit of the era with both German and English releases that resonated across continents, establishing them as icons of German pop culture.

How to Sound Like Nena

Nena's sound is characterized by a dynamic interplay of melodic synths and driving guitar riffs, underpinned by a rhythmic yet melodic bass and drum foundation. This vibrant and energetic sound is often achieved through the use of synthesizers like the Korg Kronos and Sequential Circuits Prophet-5, which add layers of lush, electronic textures. The Fender Telecaster and Gibson SG Standard deliver sharp, clear tones that pierce through the mix, enhanced by the powerful amplification of the Marshall JCM800. The result is a catchy yet robust sound that combines the melodic flair of pop with the edgy attitude of rock, making it both timeless and instantly recognizable.
