About
OM is an American musical group renowned for their hypnotic blend of space rock, doom metal, and stoner rock. Formed in 2003, the band hails from San Francisco and initially consisted of Al Cisneros (bass, vocals) and Chris Hakius (drums), both former members of the influential band Sleep. After Hakius departed in 2008, Emil Amos (drums) stepped in, and the band's lineup was further expanded with the inclusion of Tyler Trotter. OM's music is characterized by its minimalist and meditative approach, channeling the spiritual and transcendent through repetitive, mantra-like structures that evoke a sense of deep introspection and cosmic exploration.
How to Sound Like OM
OM's sound is rich with droning bass lines and expansive, atmospheric textures. The use of Rickenbacker basses by Al Cisneros provides a deep, resonant foundation, while distortion and fuzz pedals like the Boss DS-1 Distortion and Mountainking Megalith introduce a gritty, overdriven edge. The band's music often builds around repetitive, trance-inducing rhythms, with Emil Amos's C&C Custom Drum Kit delivering a powerful yet deliberate pulse. Atmospheric effects, such as those produced by the Roland RE-201 Space Echo, add a layer of cosmic ambience, enhancing the band's otherworldly soundscapes. OM's music is a meditative journey, where simplicity and repetition create an immersive, almost ritualistic experience.
