About
Sunn O))) is an American experimental music group renowned for their immersive, droning soundscapes and pioneering role in the drone metal genre. Formed in Seattle in 1998, the band is the brainchild of Stephen O'Malley (guitar) and Greg Anderson (guitar), both of whom bring a wealth of influences from their previous projects like Khanate and Goatsnake. Sunn O)))’s music blurs the lines between doom metal, dark ambient, and post-metal, often described as "power ambient" due to its sheer intensity and minimalistic approach. Known for their enigmatic stage presence, the band performs in robes amidst dense fog, creating a ritualistic atmosphere that complements their slow, heavy compositions.
How to Sound Like Sunn O)))
Sunn O))) crafts a sound that is deeply immersive and sonically monolithic, characterized by sustained, low-frequency drones that envelop the listener. Their sonic palette is heavily reliant on the use of massive amplifiers, such as the iconic Sunn Model T Amplifier Head, to produce their earth-shaking tones. The use of distortion and fuzz effects pedals, including the Pro Co RAT and Electro-Harmonix Sovtek "Green Russian" Big Muff Pi V7C, contributes to their dense, textured sound. Sunn O)))’s music is a study in contrasts—overwhelming yet meditative, chaotic yet structured, creating a hypnotic experience that challenges conventional musical boundaries.
