About

Ought is a dynamic indie rock band from Montreal, Canada, known for their eclectic blend of post-punk, noise rock, and art punk influences. Formed in 2011, the group consists of Tim Darcy (vocals, guitar), Ben Stidworthy (bass), Matt May (keyboards), and Tim Keen (drums, violin). Ought emerged from Montreal's vibrant D.I.Y. scene, channeling the energy of underground politics and loft parties into their music. The band's sound is shaped by a mix of high-energy mid-'90s emo and the angular, cerebral qualities of early college rock, drawing comparisons to bands like Talking Heads and The Feelies.

How to Sound Like Ought

Ought's sonic landscape is characterized by angular guitar riffs and propulsive rhythms that create a tense yet exhilarating atmosphere. Their sound often walks the line between raw and polished, with Tim Darcy's Fender Telecaster providing sharp, cutting tones enhanced by effects like the Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer for overdrive and the Boss DD-3 Digital Delay for added depth. The addition of synth textures from Matt May's Clavia Nord Electro 2 enriches the band's sound, offering both warmth and dissonance. Ought's music captures a live-wire intensity and experimental edge, making their compositions both unpredictable and compelling.
