About

Women was an influential Canadian indie rock band known for their intricate, experimental sound and innovative approach to post-punk and art rock. Formed in 2007 in Calgary, Alberta, the group consisted of Chris Reimer (guitar), Mike Wallace (drums), Pat Flegel (vocals, guitar), and Matt Flegel (bass). Their music blended elements of noise rock, dream pop, and lo-fi with a psychedelic twist, earning them comparisons to acts like Velvet Underground and Caribou. Women released two critically acclaimed albums, their self-titled debut and Public Strain, before disbanding in 2012 following the tragic passing of Chris Reimer.

How to Sound Like Women

Women's sound is characterized by a raw, textured sonic landscape that merges abrasive noise with melodic undertones. Their music often features a wash of reverb and delay, creating an ethereal yet dissonant atmosphere. The use of Fender Telecaster guitars, paired with effects like the Malekko Heavy Industry Chicklet and Death By Audio Reverberation Machine, contributes to their dreamy yet gritty guitar tones. The bass lines, particularly from a Fender Precision Bass, add a grounding depth, while the drumming is both dynamic and minimalist, driving the experimental rhythms forward. To capture Women’s unique sound, musicians might focus on blending lo-fi production with artful noise and unconventional song structures.
