About
Praxis is an avant-garde supergroup that fuses elements of funk rock, progressive rock, and experimental music to create an eclectic and boundary-pushing sound. The group originated in the early 1990s as one of producer Bill Laswell's many projects. Its core lineup boasts an impressive roster of musicians, including the enigmatic Buckethead (guitar), legendary Bootsy Collins (bass), keyboard wizard Bernie Worrell (keyboards), and Brain (drums), with additional contributions from turntablist AF Next Man Flip. Known for their improvisational style and genre-blending compositions, Praxis has become a staple in the experimental music scene, delivering a unique sonic experience that defies conventional categorization.
How to Sound Like Praxis
Praxis’s sound is a vivid exploration of aggressive rhythms and experimental textures, characterized by Buckethead's virtuosic guitar work that ranges from heavy riffs to intricate solos. The use of gear like the Engl E645 PowerBall 2 Head and Boss OS-2 OverDrive/Distortion contributes to the band's gritty and versatile guitar tones. Bootsy Collins's bass lines, often delivered through his Warwick Bootsy Collins Infinity Signature Bass, inject a deep funk groove that anchors the chaotic soundscapes. Bernie Worrell's keyboards, including the Kawai PH50, add layers of psychedelic and ambient textures, enriching the band's complex and immersive sound. This fusion of heavy, experimental, and groove-laden elements creates a dynamic and unpredictable auditory journey that defines Praxis’s innovative approach to music.
