About
Protomartyr is a Detroit-based post-punk band renowned for their raw, dynamic sound and incisive, literate lyrics. Formed in 2008, the group consists of Joe Casey (vocals), Greg Ahee (guitar), Scott Davidson (bass), and Alex Leonard (drums). With their roots firmly planted in the grit and grind of Detroit, Protomartyr's music blends elements of post-punk, noise rock, and art punk, creating a sonic landscape that is both challenging and engaging. Their early work, launched with their debut album No Passion All Technique, quickly gained them a following, leading to collaborations with labels like Hardly Art and Domino.
How to Sound Like Protomartyr
Protomartyr's sound is characterized by its raw, visceral energy and intricate, layered dynamics. The guitar work of Greg Ahee is a study in contrasts, moving from jagged, aggressive riffs to haunting, echo-laden melodies, often utilizing a Fender Telecaster Deluxe paired with a Fender 'Silverface' Twin Reverb for a robust, vintage tone. Ahee's use of effects like the Earthbound Audio Supercollider Fuzz and TC Electronic Hall Of Fame Reverb further enhances the band's textural depth, allowing for shifts between stark, bare-bones moments and sweeping, noise-infused crescendos. The rhythm section, anchored by Davidson and Leonard, offers tight, propulsive grooves that maintain an undercurrent of tension, perfectly complementing Casey's intense, spoken-word vocal delivery. Together, these elements create a sound that is both confrontational and thought-provoking, capturing the essence of modern post-punk.
