About
Quarterflash is an American rock band that emerged from Portland, Oregon in the early 1980s. The group was formed by merging two popular local bands, Seafood Mama and Pilot. Rindy Ross (vocals, saxophone) and her husband Marv Ross (guitar) spearheaded the ensemble, alongside Jack Charles (guitar), Rick DiGiallonardo (keyboards), Rich Gooch (bass), and Brian David Willis (drums). Known for their unique blend of rock and new wave, Quarterflash carved their niche with a saxophone-driven sound, achieving commercial success with hits like "Harden My Heart" and "Find Another Fool." Their music is characterized by catchy hooks and a polished rock aesthetic, which remained consistent through their four studio albums in the 1980s.
How to Sound Like Quarterflash
Quarterflash’s sound is defined by melodic rock elements infused with new wave textures, creating a dynamic interplay between saxophone and electric guitars. The saxophone brings a sultry, melodic layer to their tracks, often providing a distinctive lead voice that sets them apart from other rock bands of their era. Electric guitars contribute to the driving rock foundation, with rhythmic strumming and occasional lead licks that enhance the energetic vibe. To capture this sound, musicians might employ bright, clean guitar tones with moderate use of reverb and delay to add depth. The keyboards and rhythm section provide a steady, rhythmic backbone, supporting the melodic instruments without overpowering them. Emulating Quarterflash's sound involves balancing these elements to maintain the vibrant, yet polished energy that defines their music.
