About

The Power Station is a dynamic rock supergroup formed in 1984, known for their fusion of rock, new wave, and dance rock. The band features John Taylor (bass) and Andy Taylor (guitar) from Duran Duran, alongside Robert Palmer (vocals) and Tony Thompson (drums), formerly of Chic. The collaboration emerged during a hiatus from Duran Duran, with the members initially coming together to record a funky rendition of T. Rex's "Bang a Gong (Get It On)." Their self-titled debut album, released in 1985, features hits like "Some Like It Hot" that showcase their ability to blend rock energy with danceable grooves.

How to Sound Like The Power Station

The Power Station’s sound is characterized by a bold, rhythmic intensity, driven by Thompson's powerful drumming and John Taylor's punchy bass lines. The gritty, expressive guitar work of Andy Taylor adds a rock edge, often utilizing the Yamaha SG90 to deliver sharp, compelling riffs. Robert Palmer's commanding vocals, often captured with a Shure SM58, bring a soulful, polished layer to their music. The combination of danceable beats and rock-driven melodies defines their unique sonic palette, making use of robust bass amplification and rhythmic guitar textures to create an energetic and infectious sound.
