About
The Tubes are an eclectic American rock band known for their theatrical live performances and satirical takes on popular culture. Originating from Phoenix, Arizona in the late 1960s, the group solidified their lineup in San Francisco in 1972. The band includes Fee Waybill (lead vocals), Bill Spooner (guitar, vocals), Roger Steen (guitar, vocals), Vince Welnick (keyboards, vocals), Michael Cotten (synthesizers, visuals), Rick Anderson (bass), and Prairie Prince (drums). Their music spans a wide array of genres including rock, new wave, and art rock, marking them as pioneers of genre-blending and performance art in the rock scene.
How to Sound Like The Tubes
The Tubes' sound is a dynamic blend of satirical rock and theatrical new wave, characterized by both edgy and melodic elements. Their music often incorporates a mix of clean and distorted guitar tones, which contribute to their diverse sonic palette. For instance, the interplay of Spooner's and Steen's guitars creates a versatile backdrop that ranges from aggressive rock riffs to new wave melodies. Vince Welnick's use of keyboards and synthesizers, such as the Alesis QS8 and Hammond XB-2, adds layers of zany, yet melodic textures that enhance their satirical edge. The rhythm section, driven by Prince's dynamic drumming, maintains a robust yet flexible foundation, allowing the band to shift seamlessly between complex theatrical compositions and straightforward rock anthems.
