About
Sigh is a pioneering Japanese metal band, renowned for their eclectic and avant-garde approach to the genre. Formed in 1989 in Tokyo, the group originally consisted of Mirai Kawashima (vocals, keyboards), Satoshi Fujinami (bass), and Kazuki Ozeki (drums). Over the years, they have undergone several lineup changes, with Shinichi Ishikawa (guitar) and more recently You Oshima (guitar) joining the ranks. Sigh is celebrated for its fusion of black metal, progressive metal, and symphonic elements, often incorporating traditional oriental instruments to craft a uniquely atmospheric and experimental sound. Their debut album Scorn Defeat is a testament to their early black metal roots, while subsequent releases have explored a myriad of musical landscapes, solidifying their status as one of Japan's most innovative metal exports.
How to Sound Like Sigh
Sigh's sound is a rich tapestry of aggressive and melodic textures, characterized by dynamic contrasts and complex arrangements. Their music often juxtaposes raw, distorted guitar riffs with symphonic and psychedelic elements, creating a soundscape that is both intense and intricately layered. The use of diverse instruments like the Yamaha Reface YC Combo Organ and traditional flutes adds depth and an otherworldly quality to their compositions. Guitarists like You Oshima and Shinichi Ishikawa employ piercing solos and heavy riffing, occasionally using gear like the ESP Edwards E-MV-125FR and B.C. Rich NJ Series Mockingbird to achieve their cutting yet melodic tones. Meanwhile, Mirai Kawashima's use of effects such as the Roland RE-201 Space Echo adds a layer of ethereal ambiance, rounding out a sound that is both expansive and immersive.
