About

Snuff is a British punk rock band originating from Hendon, North London. Formed in 1986, the group has seen various line-up changes but is primarily anchored by Duncan Redmonds (drums, vocals), who remains the only constant member. Notable past members include Simon Wells (guitar) and Andy Crighton (bass), with the addition of Dave Redmonds (trombone) infusing a unique ska element into their sound. Snuff's music is a vibrant fusion of punk rock, ska punk, and melodic hardcore, known for its fast tempos, catchy hooks, and quirky, witty lyrics. Their energetic live performances and early releases on the Workers Playtime label quickly established them as a notable force in the UK punk scene.

How to Sound Like Snuff

To capture Snuff's raw and energetic sound, musicians should focus on creating a balance between driving rhythms and melodic hooks. The guitar tones are typically raw and crunchy, often achieved through overdriven tube amps that deliver a gritty edge while maintaining clarity for the fast-paced riffs. Incorporating upbeat, punchy drumming with a focus on high-tempo beats and dynamic fills is crucial to emulate their vigorous style. The bass lines are tight and rhythmic, providing a solid backbone that complements the guitar's intensity. For the ska-infused tracks, a trombone or brass section can be used to add a layer of playful, rhythmic interplay, enhancing the band's distinctive punk-ska blend. Overall, achieving Snuff’s sound involves harnessing the energetic and upbeat essence of punk while weaving in elements of ska and melodic hardcore for added texture and depth.
