About

Spoons are a Canadian new wave and pop rock band originating from Ontario, established in 1979 by Gordon Deppe (vocals, guitar) and Sandy Horne (bass) while they were still in high school. The band initially included Derrick Ross (drums) and Rob Preuss (keyboards), who contributed to their early sound on albums like Stick Figure Neighborhood. Over the years, lineup changes brought musicians like Scott MacDonald and Ian Hendry, with Colin Cripps (guitar) joining for their 1986 release Bridges over Borders. Known for their catchy melodies and synth-driven sound, Spoons have become a staple in the Canadian music scene, blending elements of pop and rock with a distinctive new wave flair.

How to Sound Like Spoons

The sonic character of Spoons is characterized by its bright and melodic nature, with a blend of clean guitar lines and lush synthesizer textures that reflect their new wave roots. The use of guitars such as the Gibson Firebird V and Fender Stratocaster by Gordon Deppe highlights their ability to merge rock elements with pop sensibilities, delivering crisp and articulate tones. Colin Cripps' use of effects like the Line 6 DL4 Delay Modeler and Diamond Tremolo TRM-1 enhances the atmospheric quality of their music, adding depth and a rhythmic pulse that complements their catchy hooks. The integration of synthesizers and dynamic guitar work creates a soundscape that is simultaneously nostalgic and fresh, capturing the essence of the 80s while remaining timeless.
