About
Steel Pulse is a pioneering British reggae band formed in 1975 in Birmingham, England. Known for their socially conscious lyrics and commitment to political and humanitarian causes, the group originally comprised of David Hinds (vocals, guitar), Basil Gabbidon (guitar), and Ronald "Stepper" McQueen (bass). Over the years, Steel Pulse's lineup has evolved, but their core mission of advocating for social justice through music remains unchanged. Their sound is rooted in reggae, with influences from dub, ragga, roots reggae, and rocksteady, marking them as one of the leading voices in modern reggae.
How to Sound Like Steel Pulse
Steel Pulse’s music is characterized by rich, vibrant rhythms and melodic grooves that blend traditional reggae with a modern edge. The band's sonic landscape is warm and rhythmic, with an emphasis on bass-driven grooves and intricate guitar riffs. David Hinds often utilizes a Fender Stratocaster for its bright, crisp tones that cut through the mix, while his use of the Orange Amplifiers Bax Bangeetar Guitar Pre-EQ adds depth and color to his guitar sound. The bass lines, often played by Amlak Tafari, are thick and resonant, underscored by his use of the Eden WT800 amp head for powerful low-end frequencies. Keyboards, such as those played by Selwyn "Bumbo" Brown on the Korg Triton Pro 76, add layers of texture and harmony, creating a full-bodied sound that is both compelling and dynamic. Steel Pulse’s music captures a vibrant, uplifting feel that resonates with audiences worldwide, making their style distinct and enduring.
