About

Striborg is a unique and evolving musical project hailing from Tasmania, Australia. The brainchild of Russell Menzies, who also goes by the moniker Sin Nanna, Striborg began its journey in the early 90s under the name Kathaaria. Transitioning to Striborg in 1997, the project has since delved into a myriad of genres, including dark ambient, black metal, atmospheric black metal, and depressive black metal. Known for its solitary and experimental nature, Striborg has continuously pushed the boundaries of sound, even venturing into a self-defined "Blackwave" genre that melds elements of 80s synth-pop, contemporary darkwave, and the atmospheric textures of black metal.

How to Sound Like Striborg

Striborg's sound is an intricate tapestry of lo-fi darkness and haunting atmospheres, often characterized by its raw and abrasive textures. Menzies crafts this unique sonic landscape using a blend of analog and digital equipment. The Yamaha MT4X 4-Track Cassette Recorder provides a gritty, unpolished recording quality that complements the project's underground aesthetic. The addition of the Boss MT-2 Metal Zone injects a piercing distortion, enhancing the aggressive edge of the music. Meanwhile, the Korg Minilogue XD synthesizer allows for the creation of eerie, ambient soundscapes that weave through the dense layers of black metal intensity. This fusion of analog warmth and digital experimentation results in an atmospheric, immersive listening experience that is both unsettling and captivating.
