Formed in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1964, the band initially gained attention as a backing group for artists like Otis Redding. The original lineup included Jimmy King (guitar), Ronnie Caldwell (organ), Phalon Jones (saxophone), Carl Cunningham (drums), Ben Cauley (trumpet), and James Alexander (bass guitar). After a tragic plane crash in 1967 that claimed the lives of most members, Cauley and Alexander reformed the band, ushering in a new era of success in the 1970s with hits like "Shake Your Rump to the Funk." The Bar-Kays have continued to evolve, leaving an indelible mark on the genres of southern and Memphis soul.
