About

Zapp is an American funk band that emerged from Hamilton, Ohio, in the late 1970s. Known for their infectious blend of funk, electro, and synth-driven grooves, the group was spearheaded by Roger Troutman (vocals, guitar, talk box) and his brothers Lester (drums), Larry (percussion), and Tony Troutman (bass). The band became a cornerstone of the electro-funk scene, characterized by its use of vocoders and talk boxes, and drew significant influence from the likes of Prince and Cameo. Zapp's debut album, released in 1980, catapulted them into the spotlight with hits like "More Bounce to the Ounce," solidifying their place in the pantheon of funk music.

How to Sound Like Zapp

Zapp’s sound is defined by its electrifying and groove-laden character, with a heavy emphasis on rhythmic bass lines and synthesized melodies. Their music often features a polished yet funky vibe, driven by Roger Troutman's pioneering use of the Electro-Harmonix Golden Throat for those iconic talk box effects. The Yamaha DX100 and Moog Minimoog synths inject a rich, analog warmth into their tracks, blending seamlessly with the dynamic guitar work provided by Roger's Gibson Les Paul Custom. This combination of electronic elements, tight rhythm sections, and vocal manipulation creates a sound that is both danceable and deeply rooted in the tradition of funk, offering a unique listening experience that remains influential in the realms of electro and hip-hop.
