About

Brass Construction is a dynamic American funk group originating from Brooklyn, New York. Formed in the late 1960s and officially adopting their name in 1973, the band is renowned for their infectious blend of acid jazz, funk, post-disco, and jazz funk. The group was led by the creative prowess of Randy Muller (writer, arranger, producer, multi-instrumentalist), and included a powerhouse lineup with Larry Payton (drums), Wade Williamston (bass), Wayne Parris (trumpet), Morris Price (trumpet), Michael "Micky" Grudge (saxophone), Jesse Ward (saxophone), Joseph Arthur-Wong (guitar), and Sandy Billups (percussion). Their music, marked by hits like "Movin'," propelled them to commercial success in the mid-1970s and beyond, earning them critical acclaim and a platinum-selling debut album.

How to Sound Like Brass Construction

Brass Construction’s sound is characterized by its tight, rhythmic grooves and vibrant brass arrangements. The group’s music is both danceable and intense, featuring a seamless blend of soulful melodies and robust, driving basslines. Their compositions often include layered horn sections, creating a rich and full sonic landscape. To emulate this sound, musicians might focus on using analog synthesizers and electric pianos to capture the band's funk-driven energy, while brass instruments and dynamic percussion play crucial roles in achieving the ensemble's signature lively texture. The use of polished production techniques helps maintain clarity and punch, even as the arrangements become increasingly complex and electronic in their later works.
