About
The Crusaders are an influential American band renowned for their dynamic blend of jazz fusion, funk, soul jazz, smooth jazz, and jazz funk. Formed in Houston, Texas, the group originally came together as the Swingsters in 1954, with core members Joe Sample (piano), Wilton Felder (tenor saxophone), Stix Hooper (drums), and Wayne Henderson (trombone). As they evolved, they adopted the name "The Jazz Crusaders," which later became simply "The Crusaders" in 1971 to reflect their expanding musical horizons. The band's lineup saw various changes over the decades, with notable contributions from guitar virtuoso Larry Carlton during their peak years. The Crusaders achieved commercial success with their ability to seamlessly integrate the rhythmic elements of R&B and Memphis soul into the sophisticated framework of jazz.
How to Sound Like The Crusaders
The sound of The Crusaders is characterized by a smooth, melodic fusion of jazz and funk, underpinned by rich horn arrangements and a driving rhythm section. Their music often incorporates a clean, polished tone with an infectious groove, making extensive use of soulful saxophone lines and expressive piano melodies. Larry Carlton's guitar work, notable for its fluid and articulate style, often employed a Fender 1951 Telecaster and Fender Stratocaster, both contributing to the band's warm, yet precise sound. Carlton's use of effects like the Providence DLY-4 Chrono Delay added depth and texture, complementing the ensemble's sophisticated harmonies. The Crusaders' music is a testament to their ability to create a vibrant, yet laid-back atmosphere, appealing to both jazz purists and lovers of funk-infused rhythms.
