About
The Equals are a pioneering British band formed in North London in 1965, known for their vibrant fusion of pop, blues, R&B, ska, and blue-beat. The original lineup included Eddy Grant (guitar), Pat Lloyd (guitar), John Hall (drums), and brothers Derv Gordon (vocals) and Lincoln Gordon (guitar). Renowned as the first multi-racial band in the UK, The Equals captivated audiences with their infectious energy and diverse sound. Their catalog boasts hits such as "Baby Come Back," "Viva Bobby Joe," and "Black Skin Blue Eyed Boys." Over the years, The Equals have continued to evolve, with Pat Lloyd remaining as the longest-serving original member.
How to Sound Like The Equals
The Equals' sound is characterized by energetic, rhythm-driven grooves and a blend of melodic and rhythmic guitar work. Their music often features the bright, chiming tones of the Fender Telecaster, which provides a crisp foundation for their dynamic style. Eddy Grant's use of the Wandré Davoli Rock 6 adds a unique, jangly texture that complements the band's eclectic mix. The drumming is punchy and engaging, driving the music forward with infectious beats that invite listeners to dance. The Equals' vibrant, cross-genre approach creates an enduring sound that remains as compelling today as it was at the height of their fame.
