About

The Five Stairsteps were an influential American soul group that emerged from Chicago, making a mark as the "First Family of Soul." Formed in 1958, the group consisted of siblings Clarence Burke Jr. (lead vocals, guitar), Alohe Burke (contralto vocals, trumpet), James Burke (first tenor, guitar), Kenneth Burke (second tenor, bass), and Dennis Burke. Managed by their father, Clarence Sr., who also played bass, the group was known for their rich vocal harmonies and contributions to the Chicago soul and classic soul genres. Their music frequently graced the R&B charts through the late 1960s and early 1970s, with hits like "O-o-h Child" cementing their legacy.

How to Sound Like The Five Stairsteps

The sound of The Five Stairsteps is characterized by smooth, harmonious vocals layered over melodic and soulful instrumentals. Their music often features warm, analog textures typical of the Chicago soul scene, with a focus on expressive vocal delivery and intricate harmonies. To capture their essence, musicians might employ vintage recording techniques and use tube amplifiers to achieve a warm, inviting tone. The group also incorporated elements like brass instruments and rhythmic guitar lines, which add depth and groove to their arrangements. A balanced mix of percussive elements and melodic bass lines completes the sound, providing a dynamic yet cohesive backdrop for their evocative vocal performances.
