About
The Fugs are a pioneering American rock band known for their provocative blend of folk rock, psychedelic rock, and beat poetry. Formed in New York City's East Village in 1964, the group's core members were Ed Sanders (vocals) and Tuli Kupferberg (vocals), both of whom were deeply embedded in the beat literary scene. They were soon joined by musicians like Steve Weber (guitar) and Peter Stampfel (violin, banjo) from the Holy Modal Rounders. The Fugs are celebrated for their audacious approach to music, infusing their sound with political satire, social commentary, and a raw, unrefined musical aesthetic that helped lay the groundwork for the punk and anti-folk movements.
How to Sound Like The Fugs
The Fugs' sound is an eclectic mix of raw, gritty textures and unconventional sonic experimentation. Their music often features jangly guitars paired with simple, driving rhythms, creating an intentionally unpolished vibe that captures the essence of 1960s counterculture. Instruments like the Farfisa Mini Compact organ used by Lee Crabtree add a quirky, psychedelic layer to their sound, while the use of semi-hollowbody guitars, such as the Gibson ES-125 TD, provides a resonant, vintage tone. The Fugs' music thrives on its freeform, improvisational style, often embracing chaotic and satirical elements that reflect their defiant artistic spirit.
