About

The George Benson Quartet was an influential jazz ensemble formed in 1965 by the prodigious guitarist George Benson. Known for its hard bop and soul jazz styles, the group featured Ronnie Cuber on baritone saxophone, the organ genius Dr. Lonnie Smith, and a rotating cast of drummers including Jimmy Lovelace, Ray Lucas, and Marion Booker. This quartet made a significant mark on the jazz world despite its brief existence, producing two acclaimed albums, It's Uptown and The George Benson Cookbook. The group was celebrated for its dynamic live performances and Benson’s virtuosic guitar work, which drew inspiration from jazz legends like Wes Montgomery and Charlie Christian.

How to Sound Like The George Benson Quartet

The George Benson Quartet's sound is characterized by a seamless blend of rhythmic complexity and melodic richness. Benson's guitar work, often performed on his Ibanez LGB3000 or Gibson Johnny Smith, is marked by a clean and articulate tone, providing a vibrant contrast to the earthy, pulsating grooves of Smith's Hammond B-3 organ. The warm, tube-driven amplifiers like the Fender George Benson Hot Rod Deluxe add a rich depth to the guitar's sound, while the dynamic drumming maintains a lively, yet controlled energy that complements the group's intricate interplay. This musical synergy creates a sound that is both sophisticated and accessible, capturing the essence of mid-60s jazz innovation.
