Joe Pass' Gear
This Gibson guitar, the Es175, was the main guitar of Joe Pass. He got one for his birthday from a guy named Mike Peak in 1963, who saw Joe Pass playing jazz on a solid body (the Fender Jazzmaster).
Other jazz guitarist who played the Gibson ES175: Jim Hall, Pat Metheny, Wes Montgomery (in the early days), Kenny Burrell
Jazz guitarist Joe Pass is known for playing a Fender Jazzmaster, a solid body electric guitar. A user-uploaded photo on Asahi-net shows Pass with the Jazzmaster, highlighting its role in his early performances before he famously transitioned to the Gibson ES-175.
In 1970 Joe Pass started using a D'Aquisto guitar. The guitar was built specifically for Joe.
Here is a perfect jazz guitar amp great for getting George Benson and Joe Pass type tones. In fact both of these players were known to use Polytone amps extensively.
This amp is solid state, but it is warm and touch responsive like a tube amp. The clean channel is perfect for jazz or that Fender-like clean tone or use the distortion setting for a warm, overdriven classic rock or blues sound. There are bright, normal, and dark setting on both channels. The distortion is controlled by the red 2 stage knob. Reverb and tremolo work fine. This amp is a combo of one 12" speaker and two 8" speakers. It is in very good condition, everything seems to work well and sound good. Please see the pictures. Contact me for any additional information. Since this is a used piece of vintage electronics it is being sold AS-IS.
Here is a picture of Joe playing the Epiphone "Joe Pass" at the clinic I referred to, approximately a year before he died. They had just started putting his name on the guitar at that time. Keith
In the YouTube video "Joe Pass - When You Wish Upon A Star," Joe Pass is seen playing the Ibanez JP-20, a semi-hollowbody electric guitar. This model, developed in collaboration with Maurice Summerfield, was based on Pass's Jimmy D'Aquisto custom guitar and produced in limited quantities until 1991.
At age 14, Joe Pass is pictured with a Martin 00-42, a gift from his father, who worked in a steel mill. This instrument became central to his early musical development, as he dedicated many hours to practice, laying the foundation for his legendary career. The image is sourced from Asahi-net.
Joe Pass used to play a Fender Jazzmaster during his stay at the Synanon Center in California, where he tried to kick drugs. There are also pictures of him playing a Fender Jaguar. After 15 months in Synanon Joe Pass recorded Sounds of Synanon in 1961 together with Arnold Ross, another Synanon resident. During his stay Joe Pass didn’t have a guitar of his own, he used this Fender guitar that was owned by the Synanon Rehab Facility. The Fender Jazzmaster was first introduced in 1958 and was originally marketed at jazz guitarists. However, The Jazzmaster wasn’t embraced by the jazz musicians, but it became popular amongst surf rock guitarists.
In the picture below, Joe Pass is playing a Fender Jaguar, recognizable by the single-coil pickups. The Fender Jazzmaster has wide “soapbar” pickups.
