About

The Housemartins were a British band from Hull, formed in 1984, known for their fusion of New Wave, Britpop, and Jangle Pop. The group originally consisted of Paul Heaton (vocals, guitar), Ted Key (bass), Stan Cullimore (guitar), and Hugh Whitaker (drums). In 1985, Norman Cook replaced Key on bass, and Dave Hemingway later took over on drums. The Housemartins gained popularity with their melodic guitar pop, characterized by catchy tunes and witty, politically charged lyrics. They achieved UK chart success with hits like "Happy Hour" and an a cappella rendition of "Caravan of Love," before disbanding in 1988.

How to Sound Like The Housemartins

The Housemartins' sound is rooted in clean, jangly guitar riffs that echo the upbeat yet introspective nature of their music. This sound is often associated with bright, trebly tones that can be effectively achieved using a combination of Session Sessionette 75 combo amps and Rickenbacker or Fender-style guitars for that distinctive chime. Their rhythm section maintains a steady, melodic groove, with a dynamic bass underpinning by Norman Cook, who later became known as Fatboy Slim. The band's crisp, articulate drumming supports their playful, yet earnest vocal harmonies, creating a sound that is both uplifting and thought-provoking. The Housemartins' music thrives on simplicity and accessibility, making use of straightforward yet effective modulation effects to enhance their rhythmic and harmonic layers.
