About
The HU is a Mongolian band that fuses elements of rock, folk rock, metal, folk metal, heavy metal, oriental metal, and Mongolian alternative to create a genre they call "Hunnu Rock." Formed in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia in 2016, the group consists of members who are adept at blending traditional Mongolian instruments and throat singing with the powerful drive of Western rock. Their lineup includes Gala (lead vocals, morin khuur), Jaya (jaw harp, tsuur, backing vocals), Enkush (lead morin khuur, backing vocals), and Temka (tovshuur, backing vocals). The HU quickly gained international recognition with their debut album, The Gereg, which topped multiple charts and showcased their unique cultural and musical identity.
How to Sound Like The HU
To capture The HU's distinctive sound, musicians should focus on an aggressive yet melodic sonic character. Their music seamlessly integrates traditional Mongolian instruments, creating a rich tapestry of textured, organic sounds. The morin khuur and tovshuur provide a deep, resonant foundation, while throat singing adds a haunting, ethereal layer. For a rock edge, look to overdriven guitars and powerful, driving rhythms, often enhanced with distortion and analog effects. The HU's arrangements blend ancient and modern elements, using layered vocals and harmonic chants to build an epic and immersive soundscape. Percussion in their music is both forceful and precise, often featuring dynamic shifts that propel the music forward. Achieving The HU's sound involves balancing the raw energy of metal with the intricate melodies of traditional Mongolian music, creating a powerful and evocative listening experience.
