About

The Levellers are a renowned English band that emerged from Brighton in 1988, known for their distinctive blend of rock, folk rock, and Celtic punk. The band was originally formed by Mark Chadwick (vocals, guitar), Alan Miles (multi-instrumentalist), Jeremy Cunningham (bass), Charlie Heather (drums), and Jon Sevink (fiddle). Not long after their debut album, Simon Friend joined the lineup, replacing Miles, helping to solidify their sound that marries the energy of punk with the storytelling of folk music. Over the decades, The Levellers have become a staple in the Britpop and indie scenes, with albums like Levelling the Land and Zeitgeist capturing widespread acclaim.

How to Sound Like The Levellers

The Levellers' sound is characterized by a dynamic fusion of raw, driving energy and melodic, folk-inspired elements. Their music often features rich, layered guitar tones, achieved with instruments like the Gibson Les Paul and Fender Telecaster, which deliver both warmth and punch. The inclusion of the fiddle by Jon Sevink adds a distinct Celtic flair, weaving through the robust rhythm section anchored by Cunningham's use of the Gibson Thunderbird IV. The band’s use of overdrive pedals, such as the Fulltone OCD, contributes to their gritty yet melodic sound, creating an energetic and immersive listening experience. This combination of aggressive punk rhythms with folk melodies defines The Levellers' unique sonic identity, making them a compelling act in both live and studio settings.
