About
The Life and Times is an American alternative rock band known for their rich, atmospheric soundscapes and dynamic songwriting. Emerging from Kansas City in 2002, the group was formed by Allen Epley (vocals, guitar) following the disbandment of his previous band, Shiner. Joining him are John Meredith (bass) and Mike Myers (drums), creating a powerful trio that blends elements of post-hardcore, space rock, and post-rock. Their music channels influences from bands like Sunny Day Real Estate and Jawbox, offering a unique mix of layered guitars and driving rhythms.
How to Sound Like The Life and Times
The Life and Times' sound is characterized by layered guitar textures and expansive sonic landscapes, often achieved with the use of effects like delay and reverb to create a sense of vastness. Allen Epley’s preference for guitars like the Fender Blacktop Jazzmaster HS and Hohner Telecaster Deluxe allows for a versatile tonal palette, ranging from bright, jangly cleans to more distorted, aggressive tones. Amplification through a combination of a Hiwatt Custom 100 Amplifier Head and a Vox AC30 adds a powerful, tube-driven warmth to their sound. The rhythm section provides a solid yet fluid foundation, with bass lines that underscore the harmonic depth and drums that drive the dynamic shifts in intensity. This combination of gear and technique results in a sound that is both lush and intense, capturing the band's signature blend of melodic exploration and rhythmic force.
