About

The Lotus Eaters are a Liverpool-based band that emerged in the early 1980s, blending elements of New Wave, Jangle Pop, and Synth-Pop. The group was formed in 1982 and originally comprised Peter Coyle (vocals), Jeremy Kelly (guitar), Mike Dempsey (bass), and Stephen Creese (drums). Despite being initially associated with the New Romantic movement due to their style, their music diverged into a more understated and melodic sound, characterized by elegant guitar riffs and emotive vocals. Their debut album, No Sense of Sin, and the hit single "The First Picture of You" exemplify their blend of melancholic pop influences with a distinctive 80s flair.

How to Sound Like The Lotus Eaters

The Lotus Eaters' sound is defined by lush, melodic guitar work and ethereal vocals, creating a dreamy and nostalgic atmosphere. Their music often features jangly guitar riffs, reminiscent of 60s pop influences, layered with breathy, emotive vocals. The guitars, like those played by Jeremy Kelly, typically utilize chorus and reverb effects to enhance their shimmering quality, while the bass, as played by Mike Dempsey with a Guild B-301 Electric Bass, provides a warm and melodic foundation. This combination results in a sound that is both wistful and uplifting, capturing a timeless quality that resonates with listeners drawn to the evocative and emotional depth of their music.
