About

The Magnetic North is an experimental folk group formed by the collaboration of Erland Cooper (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Simon Tong (guitar), and Hannah Peel (vocals, keyboards, trombone). Originating from the UK, the trio crafts evocative soundscapes inspired by the landscapes and histories of specific locales, such as the Orkney Islands and the town of Skelmersdale. Their music marries traditional folk elements with contemporary experimental vibes, creating a rich tapestry of sound that draws listeners into a world of storytelling and atmospheric beauty.

How to Sound Like The Magnetic North

The Magnetic North's sound is characterized by its lush, layered textures and hauntingly melodic themes. The use of semi-hollowbody guitars like the Fender Coronado II and Gibson ES-335 provides a resonant warmth and depth, while the inclusion of digital effects such as the Boss DD-5 Digital Delay and Boss RV-5 Digital Reverb adds a spacious, ethereal quality to their compositions. This combination of analog warmth and digital ambiance supports their storytelling approach, enveloping the listener in a sonic environment that feels both expansive and intimately connected to the narratives they explore.
