About

The Notting Hillbillies is a British-American musical group known for their blend of country rock, blues, and folk. Formed as a side project by Mark Knopfler, the frontman of Dire Straits, the group emerged in the late 1980s. Alongside Knopfler, who handled guitar and vocals, the band featured Steve Phillips (guitar, vocals), Brendan Croker (guitar, vocals), and Guy Fletcher (keyboards, vocals). The lineup was rounded out by Ed Bicknell on drums and Paul Franklin on pedal steel guitar. The Notting Hillbillies released one album, Missing...Presumed Having a Good Time, which showcased their unique sound that effortlessly mingled rock, skiffle, and country blues influences.

How to Sound Like The Notting Hillbillies

The Notting Hillbillies’ sound is characterized by its earthy, acoustic-driven warmth and the subtle interplay of electric and slide guitars. Their music exudes a laid-back, rustic charm, often featuring the twang of pedal steel and intricate fingerpicking patterns. Mark Knopfler's use of the Fender Mark Knopfler Stratocaster Electric Guitar adds a crisp yet mellow tone, while his Reinhardt The Storm 33 Amplifier delivers a smooth, vintage sound that complements the band’s intimate and unpretentious vibe. The inclusion of effects like the Crowther Hot Cake provides a touch of overdrive, enhancing the rich, sonic tapestry that defines their music. Musicians looking to capture this group's essence should focus on balancing acoustic elements with vintage electric textures to evoke their relaxed, down-to-earth feel.
