About
The Parlotones are a celebrated South African indie rock band originating from the West Rand in Johannesburg. Formed in 1998, the group consists of Kahn Morbee (vocals, guitar), Paul Hodgson (lead guitar), Glen Hodgson (bass guitar, keyboards, backing vocals), Neil Pauw (drums), with Rob Davidson (keyboards, backing vocals) joining in 2017, and Trevor Rebello as a collaborator since 2023. Their sound is a dynamic blend of rock, South African rock, and African pop, drawing early inspiration from British indie and alternative acts such as The Smiths and Radiohead. Over their career, The Parlotones have become one of South Africa's best-selling music artists, known for their relatable themes and engaging melodies.
How to Sound Like The Parlotones
The Parlotones' music is characterized by melodic, emotionally resonant rock with an engaging balance of clean and ambient textures. Their sonic landscape is often crafted through the use of delay and modulation effects, giving their songs a rich, layered quality. For example, Glen Hodgson's use of the Boss DD-6 Digital Delay and the MXR M234 Analog Chorus contributes to the band's lush, expansive sound. The interplay between Morbee's vocals and the dynamic guitar work creates an immersive experience, while the rhythm section provides a steady, yet intricate backdrop that complements the atmospheric overtones. This blend of elements results in music that is both approachable and deeply evocative, appealing to fans of indie rock with a penchant for introspective yet accessible compositions.
