About

The Postal Service is an indie-electronic collaboration between Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie and Jimmy Tamborello of Dntel fame. Originating from a unique long-distance partnership, the duo exchanged musical ideas via mail, hence the band's name. Their sound is a blend of indie rock, synthpop, and electronica, characterized by Gibbard's emotive vocals and Tamborello's intricate electronic textures. The project also features notable contributions from Jenny Lewis of Rilo Kiley, who provided backing vocals on their acclaimed debut album, Give Up.

How to Sound Like The Postal Service

The Postal Service's music is defined by its clean, melodic synths and layered textures, creating a dreamy yet rhythmic soundscape. Tamborello's use of electronic elements, such as the Elektron Machinedrum SPS-1 MKII, provides intricate beats that underpin Gibbard's introspective lyrics and guitar work. Gibbard's setup often includes the Gibson J-45 for its warm acoustic resonance, while effects pedals like the Strymon blueSky Reverberator add spacious, ambient layers to their compositions. This fusion of analog warmth and digital precision results in a sound that is both nostalgic and forward-thinking, perfect for those seeking to emulate their distinctive indie-electronic vibe.
