About
The Skints are a dynamic and eclectic musical group hailing from Northeast London, known for their vibrant fusion of reggae, ska, punk rock, and dub. Formed in 2007 by high school friends, the band comprises Marcia Richards (multi-instrumentalist and vocals), Joshua Waters Rudge (guitar and vocals), Jamie Kyriakides (drums and vocals), and Jonathan Doyle (bass). Their music is a spirited blend of feel-good rhythms and politically charged lyrics, which has earned them a loyal fan base and critical acclaim. The Skints' unique sound bridges the gap between the underground ska-punk scene and broader reggae and dub influences, making them a standout act on both sides of the Atlantic.
How to Sound Like The Skints
The Skints’ sonic character is a lively concoction of melodic reggae rhythms and energetic punk undertones, supported by rich, dub-infused textures. Their sound is both vibrant and gritty, often featuring the warm, analog delays of the Boss RE-20 Space Echo to create an authentic dub atmosphere. Joshua Waters Rudge’s use of the MXR M115 Distortion III injects a raw edge into their compositions, while the MXR M101 Phase 90 adds a swirling, psychedelic vibe. These elements, combined with their rhythmic precision and soulful vocal harmonies, result in a sound that is both energetically rebellious and rhythmically smooth, appealing to fans of both reggae and punk genres.
