About

The Weirdos were a pioneering force in the Los Angeles punk scene, forming in the mid-1970s and quickly gaining notoriety for their frenetic energy and raw sound. Founded by brothers John Denney (vocals) and Dix Denney (guitar), the group also included Cliff Roman (guitar) and Dave Trout (bass). Their music, a blend of hardcore punk and proto-punk, channeled the chaotic spirit of early punk with a unique twist of rockabilly and surf influences. Although they disbanded before releasing a full album, their legacy lives on through compilations and reunion projects.

How to Sound Like The Weirdos

The Weirdos' sound is characterized by fast, aggressive riffs and a raw, unpolished energy. Their music thrives on an intense, manic tempo that captures the urgency of the early punk ethos. The guitar work, led by Dix Denney, often involves distorted, overdriven tones that cut through the mix, reminiscent of the chaotic performances of their live shows. The band's sonic aggression can be approximated with vintage-style tube amplifiers and pedals that emphasize distortion and fuzz, capturing the essence of their explosive, rebellious spirit.
