About
Fang is an American hardcore punk band hailing from Berkeley, California, known for its raw, aggressive sound and confrontational stage presence. Emerging in the early 1980s, the group became a significant part of the Bay Area punk scene. The band's lineup has seen various changes over the years, but its core has often revolved around Sam "Sammytown" McBride (vocals), one of the founding members. Fang's music embodies the ethos of hardcore punk with elements of noise rock and punk seamlessly woven into their high-energy performances. Their influential early releases, such as Landshark! and Where the Wild Things Are, have left a lasting impact on the punk genre.
How to Sound Like Fang
Fang’s sonic character is defined by its gritty, raw intensity and aggressive rhythms. Their sound is dirty and confrontational, relying on the distorted and fuzzy tones typical of hardcore punk. This is often achieved through the use of powerful guitars like the Gibson SG Special Electric Guitar played by Tom Flynn, which delivers a punchy midrange perfect for cutting through the mix. The fuzz-laden textures are further enhanced by effects such as the Morley PWF Power Wah Fuzz (Tel-Ray) used by Jim Martin, adding an abrasive edge to their already chaotic sound. The raw, energetic delivery is supported by amplifiers like the Mesa/Boogie Mark IV Amp Head, ensuring a robust, resonant output that matches the band's vigorous stage presence.
