About
Ultimate Spinach was a prominent psychedelic rock band that emerged from Boston in the late 1960s, known for their role in the "Bosstown Sound" movement. The group was spearheaded by Ian Bruce-Douglas, who was the primary songwriter, lead vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist, often playing electric keyboards. Other notable members included Barbara Hudson on vocals and guitar, Keith Lahteinen on drums, and Richard Nese on bass. Their music encapsulated genres like psychedelic rock, acid rock, freakbeat, and classic garage rock, showcasing a sound that was both exploratory and rooted in the era's countercultural ethos.
How to Sound Like Ultimate Spinach
Ultimate Spinach's sound is characterized by its experimental and layered textures, which blend cosmic and introspective elements with a tinge of satirical commentary on mainstream society. They often employed rich, swirling keyboard lines, complemented by fuzz-driven guitars that provided a vibrant, kaleidoscopic foundation. This multi-layered approach can be heard through gear that enhances these textures, such as the Roland JC-120 Jazz Chorus, known for its clean, shimmering tones, and the Vox Super Beatle, which adds a punchy, classic rock edge. The Fender Jazzmaster, noted for its versatile sound, also played a crucial role in shaping the band's dynamic and eclectic style, allowing for the dreamy yet assertive tonality that defined Ultimate Spinach's unique sonic landscape.
