About

Yazoo, known as Yaz in North America, is a seminal electronic duo from the UK, celebrated for their influential contributions to the synthpop and new wave genres. Formed in 1981, the group consists of Vince Clarke (synthesizers, programming) and Alison Moyet (vocals). Clarke, having departed from Depeche Mode, teamed up with Moyet to create a distinct sound characterized by electronic textures paired with soulful vocals. Their brief but impactful collaboration yielded two acclaimed albums, Upstairs at Eric's and You and Me Both, which left a lasting legacy in the world of electronic music.

How to Sound Like Yazoo

Yazoo's sound is marked by a clean, melodic synth-driven landscape, expertly crafted by Vince Clarke's mastery of synthesizers and drum machines. The use of gear like the Yamaha DX7 and Korg Rhythm 55 KR-55 Drum Machine provides a sharp, rhythmic foundation that complements Alison Moyet's powerful, emotive vocal delivery. Clarke's preference for bright, analog synth tones and precise sequencing creates a sound that is both energetic and emotionally resonant, while Moyet's vocal lines soar above, adding a layer of soulful complexity. The integration of these elements results in a sound that is both timeless and forward-thinking, embodying the essence of early 80s electronic pop.
